Module overview

Leader as Coach offers 6 total modules, 6 LIVE group Q&A sessions, video lessons, private 1:1 sessions with your own coach and 15 Tools & resources you can use in your team.

Will this program make you into a coach? No. You already have your career and invested a lot into it. What we’ll do instead is teach you how to incorporate the coaching mindset and core principles into your day to day work as a people manager. We know that coaching is not something mysterious for which you need lots and lots of training, read 20 books, get another degree or put all your routine work on the side. However, it needs you to be open to rethinking your current ways and habits of leading people and getting things done.

This is what we will do in the first module – add more coaching to the way you work and lead and help you develop a new coaching habit.

  • Lesson 2 – Knower vs. Learner
  • Lesson 3 – Getting into the coaching habit
  • Lesson 4  – Tame your advice monster

Contrary to much received wisdom – effective leaders do not have all the answers. Instead, they make it a practice, a habit to ask lots of questions. Great questions. One of the best things you can do to strengthen your relationships, trust and engagement you have with people at work is to ask questions. When we learn to ask questions, and we do it well, our questions can literally transform individuals, teams and organizations. That’s exactly what you will learn in Module 2.

  • Lesson 2 – The DNA of a powerful question
  • Lesson 3 – The art of asking questions in a 1:1
  • Lesson 4 – Ground Zero for powerful questions

Why are we talking about listening? Why is LISTENING on our program agenda? You may think c’mon – of course I listen, I listen all day long – I listen to my team, I listen to my boss, I spend hours and hours listening to people on conference calls and then I listen to my family at home – this is something that’s automatic to me. Not exactly. In Module 3, we’ll upgrade the way you listen to the people around you, so that they feel understood, heard and supported by you.

  • Lesson 3 – Roadblocks to listening
  • Lesson 4 – 3 pro coaching hacks for managers

Everyone today wants to delegate. It seems easy, but actually it is one of the myths of delegation, that it is just about sending a task to someone else. It is not. You, as a manager, are still involved. And coaching is a great way to stay involved, but lets the other person own the task. In Module 4 we will teach you new ways to think about and work with people to inspire true commitment to get the right stuff done.

What we will cover:

  • Lesson 1 – 5 Delegation myths
  • Lesson 2 – When to delegate, when not to
  • Lesson 3 – Delegating as a team competency
  • Lesson 4 – The commitment cycle
  • Lesson 5 – 4 steps to manage commitments

When you hear the word feedback – does it make you feel bitter? Or does it make you feel better? The main goal of feedback is helping people learn and improve. All good stuff. We know this, yet when it comes to feedback, we often don’t know how to do it right. Some leaders use feedback in a way that irritates or demoralizes people instead of helping them move forward. In Module 5, we will teach you how to do it differently.

What we will cover:

  • Lesson 1 – The feedback paradox
  • Lesson 2 – Asking for feedback
  • Lesson 3 – Listening to feedback
  • Lesson 4 – Engaging & learning from feedback

Are you a coach now? No. But you have learned about the coaching mindset and you have begun your journey to become a coaching leader. A leader who consciously chooses to act in ways that makes people around him or her feel heard, understood and supported. Your journey is just beginning. The only way to become more proficient, more comfortable and more confident in using the coaching leadership style is practicing every day – consciously looking for opportunities in your daily work to flex your coaching muscle and strengthen your coaching habit. That is the goal of Module 6.

Who is this program for?

Past participants tell us it’s great for first time managers who are just getting their feet wet with leading people but also for seasoned leaders interested in adding coaching as a new leadership competency into their toolbox. It is also useful for project managers who need to partner & communicate more effectively with their teammates.

The program lasts 3 months. It’s definitely not a fast-cooked weekend course. 3 months have proven to be sufficient enough time for managers to absorb, practice and transfer learning from the program to their every day work.

You should anticipate 2-3 hours a week for watching on-demand videos, completing your learning journal, participating in online group session, meeting with your coach and your program buddy.

Expect a deep dive into how your personality affects your leadership style. You’ll get two custom profiles + your own personalized web app + a 2 hour 1:1 debrief with your coach.
