“Petra, of course I have regular 1:1 meetings with them. Of course we talk. But am I doing it right? I don’t know, maybe I should ask more questions, or maybe I should take them out for coffee? I feel like I irritating and controlling them,” says my client, who was a colleague on Monday and became a boss on Tuesday.

I know that “1:1s” is one of the biggest topics for new managers. One day you are a colleague and the next day a boss. You want to do it well. You want to know how everyone is doing and at the same time check if everything is done. And I know that very few companies have the time and resources to train new managers in detail. How do I know that? I have worked with hundreds of managers in Canada and Europe – and this among the top 3 topics new managers struggle with.

Today I offer you a quick tip. It is not a panacea. We could discuss this topic for days and my basic course lasts one day. BUT,
  • If you only have 30 minutes…
  • If you’ve gone through the training and you’re still wondering if you’re doing it right…
  • If you want 3 questions as a stand-alone or part of a longer 1:1…
  • You can develop each one if you have more time or add your own questions…
Ask these 3 things
  1. What successes have you had this week? What are you proud of? What went well??
  2. Where did you trip? Where could you do better? Where did you fail?
  3. What do you need from me or others?
